GR6-A (G2936C) is a transparent glossy base glaze formulated for cone 6, consisting of 80% Ravenscrag Slip and 20% borate frit. Due to the natural composition of Ravenscrag Slip, the glaze exhibits slight iron-based amber tinting and natural variegation rather than a sterile finish. Performance is optimal on light-burning stonewares; it may lack sufficient transparency on white porcelain or appear cloudy on dark clay bodies. To mitigate crazing, consider substituting the borate frit with Ferro Frit 3195. Proper firing requires reaching a full cone 6, preferably with a soak at the peak temperature to minimize defects. This recipe serves as a versatile base for opacifiers and colorants. For opaque white finishes, add 10% zircopax. If colorant additions alter melt fluidity, adjust the frit percentage accordingly. To minimize drying cracks, increase the ratio of roasted (1000°F) to raw Ravenscrag Slip. The slurry does not respond to traditional flocculants; manage consistency and drying shrinkage by adjusting the water-to-powder ratio and the roast/raw material balance. A target specific gravity of 1.5 is recommended for consistent dipping.
