Usage Instructions

Recipe L3500 (GA6-B) is an amber-colored transparent glaze formulated for Cone 5–6 oxidation. It is designed as an Alberta Slip-based chemistry using Ferro Frit 3195 or Fusion F-2. Key features include high surface brilliance, bubble-free transparency, and lower thermal expansion compared to predecessor GA6-A, which reduces susceptibility to crazing. Application properties are enhanced by the addition of 2% iron oxide, which improves slurry rheology and acts as a fining agent to reduce micro-bubbles. For optimal results, use the C6DHSC or C5DHSC firing schedules to achieve superior surface quality and clarity. This glaze is suitable for red and brown stonewares; however, note that it does not facilitate floating blue effects or crystallization typical of rutile/titanium-based glazes. For increased durability, silica additions of up to 10% (45 micron) may be incorporated without compromising gloss. Alberta Slip should be roasted to 1000°F (538°C) prior to use to eliminate clay shrinkage and prevent cracking or crawling during firing. While the base 80:20 ratio is standard, substitution with high-performance frits like Fusion FZ-16 may further increase brilliance and melting range. For black finishes, 4% Mason 6600 black stain is sufficient for achieving a jet-black surface.
