Glaze GA10-A utilizes Alberta Slip as a base material to achieve a tenmoku-like finish at Cone 10 Reduction. To optimize drying properties and prevent cracking, a 60:40 ratio of calcined to raw material is recommended. Alberta Slip acts as a clay body; therefore, partial calcination is necessary to mitigate shrinkage. A 1% iron oxide addition is required to achieve a true tenmoku aesthetic, as the base material may otherwise appear as a deep, glossy brown. The final color and surface quality are highly sensitive to application thickness and firing atmosphere. Prepared slurries should maintain a specific gravity of approximately 1.435 (ratio of 90 parts water to 100 parts powder). This mixture demonstrates good application properties without the need for additional flocculants. Application should be performed on bisque-fired ware, ideally at 1850°F (1010°C). Excessively thick applications should be avoided to prevent crawling. While the glaze typically does not require chemical suspension agents, consistent slurry viscosity is essential for uniform results. This formulation is thermally stable on standard stoneware and porcelain bodies with minimal risk of crazing.
