Usage Instructions
MGBase3 is a calcium-alumina-silicate clear base designed for Cone 6 firing. It functions as a versatile foundation for color development using oxides and stains, providing high clarity, transparency, and a reflective, high-gloss surface. The glaze exhibits moderate flow, which effectively heals application marks such as brush strokes or dipping unevenness. It is formulated for durability and chemical stability suitable for functional dinnerware. Users should note that the glaze has moderate thermal expansion, which may present a risk of crazing depending on the clay body. Due to its mobility and gas content, it may be susceptible to pinholing on dark or high-gassing clay bodies; a kiln soak at peak temperature is recommended to mitigate this. The glaze contains a high MgO content, which acts to lower thermal expansion. Caution is advised regarding cooling rates: slow cooling may promote crystallization, shifting the surface from glossy to satin or matte. Because the glaze composition sits near a chemical tipping point for MgO, substitutions of raw materials—even those considered standard—or changes in kiln atmosphere and cooling schedules can significantly alter the finished surface texture. Successful application relies on adapting the system to specific local firing conditions and material sources.
