Usage Instructions

Recipe GA6-G is a Cone 6 oxidation glaze formulated with Alberta Slip. This version reduces lithium content relative to traditional Albany Slip formulations to mitigate shivering and improve thermal expansion compatibility. The inclusion of nepheline syenite acts as a flux to maintain melting properties. Optional calcined alumina may be added to modulate gloss and deepen coloration. The glaze produces variegated aesthetic effects, particularly on porcelain, and is sensitive to application thickness. If crazing occurs on specific clay bodies, incrementally increase lithium content. To prevent drying cracks and subsequent crawling during firing, it is recommended to use roasted or calcined Alberta Slip. Roasting at 1000°F (538°C) removes physical water, while calcination at 1850°F (1010°C) sinters particles, reducing shrinkage during application. Adjust weight ratios by approximately 3% when substituting calcined material for raw Alberta Slip.
