Usage Instructions
Glaze GR10-L is formulated using a base of 90% Ravenscrag Slip and 10% iron oxide, intended for reduction firing at Cone 10. The base Ravenscrag Slip serves as a versatile, stable medium that produces a silky transparent finish when used alone. The addition of 10% iron oxide creates a crystalline, iron-saturated surface texture. Due to the fluxing action of high iron concentrations, this glaze exhibits increased fluidity; application thickness must be controlled to prevent excessive running and potential damage to kiln furniture. The iron addition increases slurry flocculation, resulting in higher water demand and increased drying shrinkage. To mitigate associated crawling, it is recommended to calcine a portion of the Ravenscrag Slip prior to mixing. The characteristic crystalline effect is dependent on a slow cooling rate, which allows the iron to precipitate from the melt.
