Notes & Instructions
G1916Q is a versatile, expansion-adjustable transparent glaze formulated for the cone 04-02 firing range. It utilizes a base of Ferro frits (3195, 3110, and 3249) and ball clay to achieve a high-gloss surface and accommodate various clay bodies. Thermal expansion is tuned by adjusting the ratio of high-expansion Frit 3110 to low-expansion Frit 3249. To prevent crazing or shivering, verify fit using the boiling-water-to-ice-water stress test. Application should remain thin to minimize clouding and micro-bubbling, which may occur at higher temperatures due to body gas evolution. The inclusion of 15% ball clay provides necessary thixotropy for even dipping. If using kaolin instead of ball clay, small additions of bentonite may be required to maintain suspension. The addition of 2% sieved iron oxide can serve as a fining agent to mitigate micro-bubbles while enhancing surface color. Recommended firing involves a drop-and-hold schedule to ensure optimal melt and surface quality. For optimal structural integrity, fire to cone 04 or 03. Avoid cone 06, as it results in poor glaze-to-body bonding.
