Notas

Samarium(III) oxide (Sm2O3) presents as a fine, white to yellowish powder. Chemically, it forms naturally on samarium metal when exposed to humid environments or through oxidation in dry air at temperatures exceeding 150°C. In the context of ceramic glazes, this compound belongs to the rare-earth oxide category. These oxides generally act as secondary fluxes or opacifiers in glass systems, though they are often used in specialized applications to influence surface texture, alter refractive index, or serve as colorants and dopants within the glass matrix. Because of its high molecular weight and stability, it can contribute to increased melt viscosity and, depending on the concentration and base glaze chemistry, may facilitate unique crystallization effects.
