Selenium functions primarily as a specialized colorant within glass and glaze formulations. As a member of the sulfur group, this semi-metallic element is capable of producing distinct ruby and rose-colored hues. To achieve and stabilize these colors, the atmospheric conditions during firing must be carefully controlled, typically requiring a reduction or lightly oxidizing environment to ensure the element remains in its necessary state. Beyond its role in pigmentation, selenium is utilized in glass manufacturing as a decolorizing agent. When combined with cobalt, it generates a pink tone that acts as a complement to the green tints caused by iron impurities, effectively neutralizing them to create a clearer glass. Its application is generally confined to niche glaze stains and specific decorative glass compositions.
