Mercury(II) oxide (HgO), also known as mercuric oxide, is a solid inorganic compound existing in red or orange crystalline forms. In its rare natural mineral state, it is referred to as montroydite. Within the context of ceramic science and glaze formulation, there is no established technical application for this compound; it is not utilized as a flux, glass former, or colorant in standard ceramic practices. Due to the high volatility and significant toxicity associated with mercury compounds, HgO is not considered a viable or safe component for use in ceramic glazes or kiln-fired materials.
