Caesium monoxide (Cs2O) is a chemical compound categorized as an alkali metal oxide. Characterized by a yellow-orange appearance, it crystallizes in a hexagonal structure. Within the context of ceramic science, Cs2O functions as a potent flux. Due to the large atomic radius of the caesium ion, its inclusion in a glass or glaze matrix significantly disrupts the silica network, lowering the melting point and viscosity of the melt. Its behavior is analogous to other alkali oxides such as sodium or potassium, though it is rarely utilized in commercial ceramic applications due to its high cost and scarcity.
