Calcium fluoride (CaF2) is a white, inorganic crystalline compound that functions as a source of fluorine in ceramic applications. In glaze chemistry, it is primarily employed as a fluxing agent; the introduction of fluorine lowers the melting point and decreases the viscosity of the molten glaze melt. It is sparingly soluble in water, and in its natural mineral form, known as fluorspar or fluorite, it is frequently associated with trace impurities that result in various colorations. Due to its fluxing properties, it can significantly influence surface tension and the development of textures or opacification effects within a glass matrix.
