L3954B is a white, high-opacity engobe formulated for use on stoneware bodies, specifically optimized for Plainsman M390 and M340. It is engineered to match the drying and firing shrinkage of these bodies (approximately 6.7% dry-to-fired shrinkage) to ensure bond integrity and prevent peeling or flaking. The base formula contains 10% Zircopax; this may be increased to 20% for maximum whiteness. For alternative colors, use ceramic stains; avoid metal oxides, which can destabilize the slip or alter firing maturity. L3954B should be applied to leather-hard ware to allow the engobe and body to dry and shrink in unison. Due to the high moisture content of the application, manage drying rates carefully to prevent warping, particularly on appended parts like handles. Use wax emulsion on handle curves to equalize drying times. To prepare a thixotropic dipping slurry, combine 1000g powder with 780g water and approximately 3g of Darvan to achieve a specific gravity of 1.55. Adjust viscosity using Darvan for thickening or Epsom salts for thinning. A high-shear blender is recommended for mixing to eliminate agglomerates. The resulting coating provides a dense, porcelain-like surface suitable for application under transparent glazes.
