Recipe GA10-B is a Tenmoku-style glaze formulated for cone 10 reduction, utilizing Alberta Slip as the primary base. Base formulation requires 93% Alberta Slip, 5% calcium carbonate, and 2% iron oxide. Technical advantages include improved slurry suspension, consistent application, and reduced staining compared to traditional high-iron Tenmoku glazes. Properties: The glaze exhibits characteristic crystalline light brown breaking on contour edges. Melt fluidity and color intensity can be adjusted by modulating calcium carbonate and iron oxide additions, respectively. Handling and Preparation: Alberta Slip contains inherent drying shrinkage; to prevent cracking or crawling, utilize a blend of calcined and raw material. Roasting Alberta Slip to 1000°F (538°C) for 30 minutes removes moisture and volatiles, yielding a smooth powder and minimizing shrinkage. When substituting calcined material for raw in the batch, note a weight loss of approximately 3%.
