Engobe L3954N is specifically formulated for application on leather-hard clay bodies H450 and H550 to ensure optimal shrinkage compatibility. Due to its high ball clay content, it provides excellent adhesion to leather-hard surfaces. Do not use this recipe on porcelain or whitewares, as it lacks the necessary nepheline syenite content required for higher shrinkage bodies; utilize recipe L3954J for those applications. The engobe may be opacified with Zircopax for a white finish or pigmented with black stain. When applied sufficiently thick, the engobe masks body speckling, providing a uniform substrate for subsequent glaze layers. For best results, prepare as a thixotropic slurry. This material performs optimally in both oxidation and reduction firings, effectively masking underlying clay color or speckling by vitrifying to a degree consistent with the host body.
