Usage Instructions

Recipe L3724F is a frit-fluxed terra cotta body/slip formulated for Cone 03 firing. It is designed to provide improved adhesion and vitrification compared to standard terra cotta compositions. Technical performance is characterized by a narrow firing window; over-firing leads to significant shrinkage, darkening of color from red to brown, and excessive outgassing resulting in glaze bubbles. If under-fired, the body retains high porosity and susceptibility to moisture absorption. Success requires precise firing control to maintain physical integrity and glaze fit. As a slip, L3724F exhibits good adherence and develops a sheen on stoneware bodies; firing variations may produce 'flashing' effects. For applications involving layered engobes, compatibility in drying shrinkage, firing shrinkage, and thermal expansion is critical to prevent dunting or peeling. For optimal slip application, maintain a low-viscosity suspension (fluid movement for >10 seconds) and introduce powdered Epsom salts as a flocculant until the slip reaches a gel state (motion ceases within 2 seconds) to ensure even coverage without dripping.
