Recipe GA6-A is a Cone 6 amber-colored glaze consisting of 80% Alberta Slip and 20% frit (typically Ferro Frit 3134 or 3195). While it produces a high-quality transparent glass on brown and red-burning stonewares, it is generally superseded by GA6-B for standard transparent applications due to the latter's superior durability and higher Al2O3 and SiO2 content. GA6-A is specifically maintained for its unique crystallization properties; its lower Al2O3 content promotes crystal growth and rutile blue development when utilizing slow-cool or soak firing schedules (e.g., C6DHSC). To prevent drying cracks and crawling caused by the raw clay content of Alberta Slip, it is recommended to roast the Alberta Slip to 1000°F (538°C) before use to produce a stable, non-plastic powder. A 2% iron oxide addition is recommended for a richer color profile and improved bubble-fining. When using frits with very low thermal expansion, such as Frit 3249, exercise caution as the resulting glaze may risk shivering on non-crazing clay bodies.
