Usage Instructions
Recipe GR6-E is a chrome-tin burgundy glaze formulated on the Ravenscrag cone 6 base. To achieve color development, the base glaze must contain high calcium (minimum 10% CaO), low boron, and zero zinc. Additionally, MgO levels should be minimized, as magnesia interferes with chrome-tin color stability. The glaze features 0.5% chrome oxide and 7.5% tin oxide. Application thickness significantly impacts the final result; excessive thickness may compromise surface quality, while thin application highlights surface textures and irregularities. On darker clay bodies, the glaze color will appear deepened. Slow firing cycles may result in a matte surface finish. Given the complexity of raw chrome-tin chemistry, consistent results are challenging. Using a pre-calcined maroon stain is recommended for improved consistency, color accuracy, and handling safety. Refer to the GR6-A master recipe for standard mixing and firing protocols.
