Notes & Instructions

Glaze G2853B is a low-fire (Cone 04) formulation consisting of a 50:50 blend of Ravenscrag Slip and Frit 3195. For increased melt fluidity, the ratio may be adjusted to 40% Ravenscrag Slip and 60% Frit 3195. This glaze is intended for use on low-fire clay bodies, such as buff-burning stoneware. Application requires 2–3 layers via brushing or a single immersion dip to reach a thickness comparable to a credit card. Ensure thorough agitation of the suspension, preferably using an electric mixer. For decorative slips, prepare a mixture of 70% base material (L213 powder or Ravenscrag Slip) and 30% ceramic stain by weight, adding water to reach a creamy consistency. Slips may be applied at any stage from wet clay to bisque. All dry powder handling requires a respiratory mask. To prevent drying defects, manage evaporation rates with plastic covering during the initial 48 hours and remove any internal structural supports that may inhibit shrinkage. While slip-decorated pieces can be fired to Cone 04 without glazing, such surfaces remain porous and non-functional for food or liquid contact. Proper vitrification and sealing require the application of the G2853B glaze followed by a full Cone 04 firing.
