Ytterbium(III) oxide (Yb2O3) is a rare earth oxide that manifests as a chemical compound containing ytterbium in its +3 oxidation state. While it occurs in nature as a minor component within the mineral gadolinite and was historically isolated by Jean Charles Galissard de Marignac in 1878, its application in ceramic glaze chemistry is highly specialized. As a heavy rare earth oxide, it is typically employed in glass and glaze formulations for its ability to influence optical properties and structural viscosity, often serving as a refractory agent or a secondary modifier that contributes to the stability of the glassy matrix without the high fluxing activity associated with more common alkaline earth or alkali oxides.
