Thallium(I) oxide (Tl2O) functions as an essential additive in the production of specialized glasses characterized by exceptionally high refractive indices. Chemically, it incorporates thallium in the +1 oxidation state and is synthesized through the thermal treatment of thallium(I) hydroxide or carbonate under air-free conditions. While the oxide is insoluble in its dry state, it forms a basic solution of thallium(I) hydroxide upon contact with water and participates in acid-base reactions to generate various thallium(I) salts.
