NiO (Nickel Oxide)
ID: nio
Notas
Nickel(II) oxide (NiO) functions as a fundamental metallic oxide within ceramic glazes, primarily utilized as a color modifier. Due to its refractory characteristics, it is generally avoided in low-temperature glazes, as its incorporation tends to increase glaze dryness and decrease maturity in existing matte or under-fired surfaces. In glaze chemistry, it is typically employed in small concentrations to soften or nuance the coloration produced by other metallic oxides. Because of these low inclusion levels, the final aesthetic outcome can be sensitive to the chemical composition of the glaze base and vaporous interactions (flashing) from adjacent kiln contents. Chemically, NiO is recognized as a basic metal oxide, appearing in nature as the rare mineral bunsenite, and acts as a stable intermediate in industrial nickel production.
