Chlorine (Cl) is a highly reactive halogen element characterized by significant electronegativity and electron affinity. Within the specialized context of ceramic and glass science, it functions primarily as a volatile element rather than a standard glass-forming or fluxing oxide. Due to its nature as a reactive gas at room temperature and its high volatility, chlorine is generally absent from stable fired glazes. Its presence in raw materials often leads to off-gassing during the kiln firing process, which can negatively impact glaze surface quality, promote pinholing, or cause the loss of other volatile metallic components. Consequently, it is not utilized for color development, viscosity modification, or expansion control in conventional ceramic formulations.
