In the context of ceramic chemistry and glaze formulation, carbon is identified as a nonmetallic element possessing a tetravalent nature, allowing for the formation of four covalent bonds. Within glaze calculation software, the inclusion of carbon serves as a notation for carbonaceous material contributing to the loss on ignition (LOI). Because this material is effectively oxidized and expelled as a gas during the kiln firing cycle, it does not function as a ceramic oxide, flux, or glass former. Consequently, carbon is assigned a value of zero in mathematical formulations to ensure it does not influence the final calculated composition or the resulting physical properties of the fired glaze.
